Emergency Departments are the source of almost half of all admissions to hospitals, the most expensive site of care. What if there were more senior-centered, home-based alternatives?
Of the $2.9 trillion our country spends on healthcare every year, a third – almost one trillion dollars – goes to hospital-based care, some of which is not best matched to the needs of elderly patients. West Health is researching how new, more effective ways of delivering care could replace, when appropriate, hospital-based care with home-based alternatives that are more patient-centered, better matched to needs and lower in cost. With the Emergency Departments as the source of almost half of all hospital admissions, and the vast majority of unscheduled admissions, our Emergency Department-to-Home program is focused on researching more options for the emergency physicians and patient. In collaboration with the University of California at San Diego, the Institute is currently studying physician awareness of alternatives to hospital admissions from the emergency department, as well as the identification of the most appropriate patients for these programs and the potential cost savings.
